The village of Sarród near the Austrian border is located in the western part of Győr-Moson-Sopron County, between Fertő and Hanság. Its name may be derived from the Hungarian word for “mud” (sár) or “sickle” (sarló) used to harvest reed. The village of Fertőújlak and Nyárliget administratively belong to Sárród. The entire settlement, which has been inhabited since prehistoric times, has been a part of the Fertő/Fertőersee World Heritage Cultural Area since 2001.
Country house: The country house of the village was opened in 2006, where you can get an insight into the everyday life of a family that lived almost a hundred years ago. Also, regular handicraft classes and seasonal festival programs are organized here.
Kócsagvár (Heron Castle): The largest reed-roofed building in Hungary, imitating a Pecheng fishers’ village. Here you can find Kócsagvár, opened in 1993, the central building of the fifth national park of Hungary. It was named after one of the typical representatives of the local birdlife, the great heron.
Prior to the regulation of Lake Fertő, the water surface of the lake was significantly larger. The site of Kócsagvár used to be a ferry port.
László Farm: It is located in the Fertő-Hanság National Park, in the neighbourhood of Sarród. Established about 150 years ago, the renewed farm has been welcoming visitors, groups of adults and children since the summer of 2012. An exhibition presenting old Hungarian domestic animal breeds was set up in its centre.
Borsod-lane, birdwatching: It is a station on the route of the Sziki Őszirózsa educational trail, where, if lucky, you can even see whole flocks of birds. At the foot of the birdwatcher there is an artificially flooded area, where you can observe the everyday life of birds in their natural environment.
