Ógabona Square

The name Ógabona Square, located between the Castle district and Petőfi Square, first appears in the sources in 1400 as the Grain Market (Kornmarkt).

At the end of the 17th century the grain market was relocated, and from then on, the name Ógabona (Old Grain) Square was used. First the western side was built in, then along the line of the eastern castle wall and also between the two rows of houses. This is how Színház Street was formed, gradually losing its characteristics of a square. Composer Károly Goldmark lived in the house at 32 Ógabona Square for a short time after the War of Independence in 1848/49.
