The Fertő region and the Hanság were one of the largest aquatic worlds in the Carpathian Basin. The fishermen were held in great respect, and they lived in a separate street in Sopron: Halász utca (Fishermen’s street in English). Today, 3 centuries after they started to drain the area, what remained of the once rich aquatic world is only modest remnants.
