Soon celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Talamba Percussion Ensemble – originally.formed as a university friends’ group – has become known for its genre-crossing ventures, or as they like to put it, for “reconciling” different musical styles. The result: concerts that truly pack a punch. Alongside reimagining great classics, they also embrace folk music and jazz.

Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is one of the world’s most famous classical works. We have heard it in countless versions and will surely continue to do so – yet the adventure Talamba now invites us to is a uniquely special event. They have arranged one movement from each of the seasons, and then paired these with some of their own compositions that most closely echo the moods of the Baroque master’s work – though always with a playful twist in instrumentation. The idea of “doubling” The Four Seasons was born at the start of the pandemic, when not only concerts but even rehearsals suddenly became impossible. For years, Talamba had planned to adapt Vivaldi’s 1725 piece for violin and strings into their own world of percussion – and during lockdown, they finally took the first steps.Their summer takes us to the seaside, autumn is paired with folk melodies, winter’s virtuosic rhythms capture the essence of the season, and spring follows the journey of a water droplet from its birth to its arrival in the ocean.
