The Győr Philharmonic Orchestra’s subscription concert in Sopron opens with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s concert overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, composed in 1826. With this work, capturing the enchanting world of Shakespeare’s comedy, Mendelssohn – at not yet seventeen – secured his place among Europe’s leading masters.

The programme continues with Carl Reinecke’s rarely heard Harp Concerto, composed in 1884. Reinecke, a distinguished pupil at the Leipzig Conservatory founded by Mendelssohn in 1843, later became a renowned professor and the teacher of many celebrated composers. His concerto embodies the characteristic voice of late German Romanticism. The demanding solo part will be performed by the internationally acclaimed Russian harpist Alexandra Tihonova.

The concert concludes with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, the “Scottish”, first sketched during his journey to Scotland in 1829 but only completed and premiered in 1842. Inspired by the rugged landscapes and historical memories, the symphony is a captivating masterpiece that provides a fitting finale to the evening. The Győr Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by the Polish maestro Michael Maciaszczyk, who has also enjoyed a distinguished career as a violinist.
