New Casino/Liszt Ferenc Cultural Centre

Similarly to the former Old Casino on the other side of Liszt Ferenc Street, it is the hub of the town’s musical and cultural life.

On the site of today's cultural centre the old Italian bastion of the Sopron town wall stood. After its demolition, the New Casino was built in 1872 in Eclectic style. The elderly Ferenc Liszt gave two concerts (in 1874 and 1881) within its walls. A bust of the composer can be seen in front of the building, which was inaugurated in 1893 on the square in front of the Petőfi Theatre. The bust was placed in front of the Liszt Ferenc Cultural Centre in 1977.

Besides the concerts and balls, it has been an important centre of the local art scene since the end of the 19th century.
