Forchtenstein Castle

Stately bulwark, soaring Baroque castle, and princes’ “strongbox”.

Visible from miles around, Forchtenstein Castle sits atop a promontory in the Rosalia Mountains, silent witness to a tumultuous and embattled era. While its roots extend back to the 13th century, it has been closely associated with the Esterházy name since around 1620. Prince Paul Esterházy I built the fortress into a Baroque castle.

Today, it is home to the historical art collection, chamber of curiosities, armoury, and both permanent and temporary exhibitions, all of which invite visitors to take a trip back in time.
